M-1 Global has sent out a press release today confirming the rumors that WAMMA champs Shinya Aoki and Fedor Emelianenko will tangle in some sort of exhibition match, most likely to be a grappling match.
Complete rules of the Fedor vs. Aoki sparring exhibition are still being negotiated, but it will be presented as a special attraction during a 19-bout event scheduled to feature head-to-head M-1 Challenge matchups between host country Japan vs. England, Team USA West vs. South Korea, and Spain vs. France.

It’s a crazy rumor no more.  Now Fedor Emelianenko vs. Shinya Aoki is a crazy fact, according to press release sent out today by M-1 Global.  The two will square off in a “five-minute special sparring exhibition” at the “M-1 Challenge Presented by Affliction” on April 29 in Tokyo.  So what will the lightweight and the heavyweight try to do to each other over the course of the most bizarre and pointless five minutes in MMA history?  According to the press release:

Bloody Elbow is reporting that the world’s top pound-for-pound fighter, Fedor Emelianenko, will face off with one of the world’s most entertaining lightweights, Shinya Aoki, in a special event at a DEEP/M-1 event next Wednesday. Seriously.

At this point, the exact nature of the bout has not been announced. I’m guessing it will be an intense game of checkers. Perhaps, chess? No, I know, Yahtzee!

A five-minute “sparring exhibition” between Shinya Aoki and Fedor Emelianenko has been added to the line-up for the April 29 M-1 Challenge event in Tokyo, the promotion announced. Aoki is the No. 2 lightweight in the latest USA TODAY/SB Nation rankings, but Emelianenko is rated the No. 1 heavyweight.

Rumors have circulated for the past 36 hours that WAMMA heavyweight champion Fedor Emelianenko and WAMMA lightweight champion Shinya Aoki would be involved in a grappling exhibition match to take place this Wednesday at Shinjuku Face in Tokyo, Japan during the third leg of the 2009 M-1 Challenge fight series.

Two of the best MMA fighters in the world are returning to the ring next week to face off against each other in what is being referred to as a “special sparring exhibition” but sounds more like a silly waste of time for everyone involved.

Fedor Emelianenko, the best heavyweight in MMA, is going to grapple with Shinya Aoki, one of the world’s best lightweights, at Wednesday’s M-1 Challenge event in Japan. The official announcement of the meeting said the rules of the competition are still being negotiated, but it sounds like it’s going to be five minutes of the two fighters trying out submission holds on each other.

Two champions from the World Alliance of Mixed Martial Arts (WAMMA) will collide at M-1 Challenge on April 29 in Tokyo, Japan — despite being separated by four weight classes.

WAMMA heavyweight champion Fedor Emelianenko will square off against WAMMA lightweight champion Shinya Aoki in a special-rules exhibition grappling match with a proposed time limit of five minutes — designed as more of a crowd pleaser than actual competition.

First reported by MMAFighting.com, Aoki confirmed the bout during a press conference earlier this morning.

Emelianenko and Aoki are both considered to be two of mixed martial arts finest grapplers, irrespective of weight class.
